The Reality Check – Poverty Index

As at today, our trajectories suggest that Nigeria has about 91,885,874million people in extreme poverty.

Poverty has risen in Nigeria, with almost 100 million people living on less than a $1 (£0.63) a day, despite economic growth, statistics have shown.

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to end extreme poverty by 2030 is unlikely to be met—no thanks, in large part, to Nigeria.

TEN Structure

Ten is structured to work through volunteers, who complete cycles with beneficiaries in groups of tens as follows:

Stage 1

The volunteer will engage in outreaches in impoverished areas to select beneficiaries, who are breadwinners with up to Five (5) dependents and at least 2 out of school.

1

Stage 2

The volunteer will register the beneficiaries on the TEN mobile application. TEN will fund the startup of business for the beneficiaries, with a grant of Twenty Thousand Naira (N20,000) each.

2

Stage 4

All beneficiaries who are verified to have saved Four Thousand Naira (N4,000) for five (5) months, will be awarded the second grant of thirty thousand Naira (N30,000) by TEN

4

Stage 5

The volunteer will again monitor and assess the progress of the beneficiaries, while encouraging them to save at least Six - Thousand -Naira (N6,000) per month, for five (5) months

5

Stage 6

All beneficiaries who are shown to have saved six thousand Naira (N6,000) for Five (5) months, will be awarded the third grant of fifty thousand Naira (N50,000) by TEN.

6

Stage 7

The beneficiary will then be introduced to a thrift system where they will be encouraged to save Five Thousand Naira (N5,000) for 12 months, and they will be able to collect Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000) while the remaining Ten Thousand Naira (N10,000) is given back to the TEN system to support a new beneficiary. This has migrated the old beneficiary from being destitute to being a helper.
